In the Year of Faith, the Italian Bishops Make their ad limina Visit
In an interview with a German radio in 2009, Benedict XVI said: “I speak personally to each bishop.”

During the ad limina visit, which usually takes place every five years, the bishops present to the Pope a report on their dioceses according to a scheme provided by the Congregation for Bishops that includes all areas that concern the life and mission of the bishop’s diocese: from the description of the territorial organization of the Curia and of the diocese, to the population, the Christian life of the faithful, the number of priests, the life of the presbytery, in the seminary, parishes and Catholic schools. The family ministry and health ministry, as well as the social doctrine of the Church, charity, and the bishop’s relations with the civil authorities, the state of the arts and the means of social communication are also included. It all ends with an overview of the diocese and the future of the local Church. This report is very useful for knowing the life, the growth but also the difficulties of a local church, and it is the basis for the discussions of the bishops with the Pope and with the Dicasteries of the Roman Curia.
