The Tombs of the Popes are in the "grottoes" under the floor of St. Peter's Basilica. Throughout history, many popes, kings and queens have wanted to be buried near the Apostle's tomb.
Alongside the tombs, remains of Constantine's ancient Basilica are conserved in the Grottoes, including statues, mosaics, and paintings.
