The Tomb of Peter How do we know that St. Peter's tomb is under the Basilica? One of the Popes of the last century, Pope Pius XII Pacelli, was curious to know what was under the Basilica. He called archaeologists—who study the antiquities—and they dug down beneath it. They discovered tombs from the 1st century under the Basilica. One particularly intrigued them. They studied its walls, the inscriptions, and then the bones in it. After many complex studies, they concluded this was quite probably Peter's tomb. | |
The Tomb of Peter is in the Vatican Grottoes, underneath the Basilica, directly under the main altar and the dome. It is believed that Peter's body was buried by Christians in a tomb of the ancient necropolis on which the Basilica was built. There, a small shrine, the "Edicola di Gaio,” was erected to indicate where St. Peter was buried. Later, this shrine was incorporated first into Constantine's Basilica and then into the subsequent constructions. |
