Who is Pope Francis? Pope Francis now lives in Rome, but he did not always live here. He was born in Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina, on 17 December 1936. He grew up with two brothers and two sisters, but he is the oldest. As a young man, he attended school to become a chemical engineer, and after studying, between football games, he and his friends helped younger children with their homework.
While enrolled at the university and studying philosophy, he also set out to become a member of the Society of Jesus and be a Jesuit. Pope Francis was really impressed by this group, because he wanted to become a missionary and to meet the other people to announce Jesus to them, and tell them about Him not just with words, but also through behavior and actions, as he himself said: "My people are poor, and I'm one of them."
Jorge Bergoglio (this is his real name) became Pope on 13 March 2013, but he really did not expect to be elected! The first thing he said as he looked out over St. Peter's Square was simply: "Good evening!" – and everybody started liking him. |
