Who is the Pope? Have you asked yourself who the Pope is? I will tell you a story. About two thousand years ago, Jesus came to Peter, one of the apostles, and said to him, "You are Peter and on this rock I will build my Church" (Mt 16:18). Jesus knew that he could trust his friend Peter, and so he chose him among others and asked him to do something important: he will be the reference point for the disciples when Jesus will no longer be with them. Peter was the first Pope in history! Each Pope that came later is his successor. | |
The Pope is the Bishop of Rome, the Successor of Peter, the Vicar of Christ, and the Head of the Vatican State. He has many difficult tasks! How can we understand them better? Jesus said to Peter, "Feed my lambs" (Jn 21:15). We, the faithful, are the lambs who follow Jesus. The Pope, like all the bishops and priests who help them, is a shepherd who takes care of the sheep: he has the task of leading the faithful and making them feel God's love. |
