Mary Who among us does not know Mary? In Luke's Gospel (chapter 1:26-38), we read about the moment when the Angel Gabriel announced God's request to Mary. He wanted her to become the mother of the Son of God! How do you think she felt at that moment? In those pages, we read that Mary does not understand what the angel is saying, and that she is very confused. To have children, a person has to be married, and she was not married! How could she become the mother of God's Son? Mary's great response of love was when she stopped trying to understand and just put her trust in God. She knew that God wanted her own good and that of all people!
Joseph The Gospel tells us that Joseph is a good and righteous man, and that he agreed to become Jesus' "legal father." Yet, have you not wondered how he reacted the first time that Mary told him what was going to happen? At first, he thought that what Mary was saying could not be true, and that he should break off the engagement—he could not be as foolish as to accept a child that was not his own. We know, however, that he trusted Mary and, like her, trusted God!
Jesus Who among us does not know his story? Who does not celebrate his birth each year? He lived a simple life in a modest family, not because they could not be wealthier—after all, he is the Son of God. He could be king! Yet, that was not what he wanted! He chose to live in a family like everyone else, to obey his parents, and to grow, thanks to their help, in wisdom, age and grace. Once, he really made is parents angry and worry a lot: he stayed in the temple in Jerusalem instead of going back home with them. In fact, he had to listen to a greater Father. |
