Portuguese-speaking lawyers in support of a new family law

A day-long meeting to identify new ways to get greater legal protection for families. This was the goal of the second session of the “Meeting of Portuguese-speaking Lawyers” hosted by the Pontifical Council for the Family. The meeting was introduced by Monsignor Carlos Simon Vasquez, Undersecretary of the Council, and by the Ambassador of Portugal to the Holy See, Antonio Carlos Carvalho de Almeida Ribeiro. It addressed such themes as the relationship between ethics and the family, the challenges presented for the nuclear family by modern thought and the fundamental contribution that the family can make to building up human dignity.

Speaking outside the conference, Maria Teresa da Costa Macedo, President of the Osservatorio Society and Family and consultor to the Council, said that “The family must increasingly become a subject of evangelization that can led new generations to an encounter with Christ. For this reason I think we must help legislators to build up the family rather than destroying it.” Professor Macedo, speaking on behalf of all the speakers, thanked the Council for “being able to promote an operational methodology that encouraged Portuguese-speaking lawyers to share their various experiences with enthusiasm in order to provide solutions to family problems identified by the Magisterium.”
